The Bohuslav Martinů Institute
in Prague was founded in 1995 as the Bohuslav Martinů Study Center, following the initiative of PhDr. Viktor Kalabis. Its leadership was assumed by Aleš Březina, who built the institution from the ground up as a specialized center for research and the promotion of the composer’s work.
The primary goal of the Institute is to collect and archive all available materials related to the life and work of Bohuslav Martinů—specifically his scores, manuscripts, correspondence, literature, and visual or audio documents—and to facilitate their study by musicologists, performers, and the general public. Given that Martinů lived and worked across both Europe and the USA, his source materials are scattered worldwide; their systematic acquisition and copying represents a long-term mission that the Institute continues to fulfill. In doing so, it establishes Prague as an international center for Martinů research.
The Institute’s most significant undertaking is the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition project.
